Amazon Is Building Its Own 7.65-Gigawatt Gas Plant in West Texas So Its AI Data Center Never Has to Plug Into the Grid

Amazon confirmed it acquired an 8,000-acre site in Pecos County, Texas, where a 35-turbine, 7.65-gigawatt natural gas plant called GW Ranch will power its first fully off-grid AI data center campus. Texas regulators permitted the plant in January to emit up to 33 million tons of CO2 a year, which would make it the largest single source of climate pollution in the country. It lands days after Governor Greg Abbott froze new data center approvals pending an audit of the state's interconnection queue.
